Cory L. Chalfant Sr., 88, of Byesville passed away Monday (February 25, 2013) at SEORMC.
He was born August 25, 1924 in Cambridge and was the son of the late Russell and Lucille (Newman) Chalfant.
Cory retired from the former Meridian Plastics after 24 years of service. He attended Byesville High School. He enjoyed farming, squirrel hunting, riding motorcycles and loved his dogs.
As a proud U.S. Navy veteran of WWII he was one of the last Guernsey County Veterans to be involved in the battle of Normandy. He was a driver of a landing craft that stormed onto the beach on D-Day. He was honored this past year as “Veteran of the Year”. He was a lifetime member of Cambridge VFW #2901.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a brother William; a sister Ruth Chalfant Hemmeter and a granddaughter Amy.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years Dorothy (Treherne) Chalfant whom he married June 10, 1947; one son Cory “Buck” (Tonya) Chalfant of Byesville.
Calling hours will be Friday from 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. Friday at Black-Epperson Funeral Home, Byesville where services will follow at 1:00 p.m. with Rev. Nancy Parsons officiating.
Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery with military rites conducted by the Guernsey County Veterans Council.
